Flanders, a region with a surface area of 13,522 km², is situated at the heart of European purchasing power. With more than six million inhabitants and a GDP per capita which is 23% higher than EU average, it is one of the wealthiest regions in Europe. The high concentration of clusters and knowledge centres facilitates innovation in the region's sectors of excellence.

Flanders has one of the most innovative and competitive economies in Europe and also stands out thanks to the presence of several world renowned scientific and technologic institutes, such as IMEC (nanoelectronics, nanotechnology and digital economy), VITO (energy, environmental technologies and materials), Flanders DC (Creative Entrepreneurship), Flanders Make (mechatronics, product development methods and production technologies) and Flanders Drive (automotive industry).

Logistically the region also has excellent access to the rest of the world, thanks to the Port of Antwerp, which is the fifth biggest port in the world and Europe’s largest chemical cluster.
